Saw this guy in my yard west of Victor, MT. We have ten acres of riparian land, perfect for toads. The eyes have horizontal pupils. Usually there is a light stripe down the middle of the back. Distribution is a useful character for all life stages, as the range and habitat of the Western Toad do not overlap any other toad in Montana, with the possible exception of Woodhouse's Toad (Bufo woodhousii) in a very narrow area north of the Beartooth and Absaroka mountains (Maxell et al. 2003).
