About me: I live south of Missoula, Montana on the west side of the Bitterroot valley. Many of my photos are taken here in western Montana, but also around the world. I love being outdoors. I hike, bike, fish, hunt, ski and ALWAYS take photos.
I use a Canon 7D and 5D Mark III (with a few lenses and tripods) and shoot in RAW. I process my photos into JPG with Adobe Lightroom with as few adjustments as possible.
Western Toad - Bufo boreas
Saw this guy in my yard west of Victor, MT. We have ten acres of riparian land, perfect for toads.
Class - Amphibians - Amphibia, Order - Frogs / Toads - Anura, Family - True Toads - Bufonidae, Species - Western Toad - Bufo boreas
General description excerpt from Montana Field Guide:
The skin of adult Western Toads is covered with small round or oval warts on a background color that is usually green or brown. The eyes have horizontal pupils. Usually there is a light stripe down the middle of the back.
Distribution is a useful character for all life stages, as the range and habitat of the Western Toad do not overlap any other toad in Montana, with the possible exception of Woodhouse's Toad (Bufo woodhousii) in a very narrow area north of the Beartooth and Absaroka mountains (Maxell et al. 2003).
